Ride with the U through the Safari @ Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando. I was never a big fan of zoos because the animals always seemed to be cramped in small a spaces and void of the horticulture of their natural environment. Animal Kingdom is the exact opposite. Animals frolic freely in a habitat which almost mirrors their accomadations in the wild.

Outside this SoBe Haitian landmark, you’ll see a truck that’s been pimped with folk art flourishes. Inside, you’ll eat authentic grub, sip Ayisyen drinks, and listen to Manno Charlemagne and his band strumming those chansons.

Entrée hits include red snapper: a whole fish crisply fried and curled on a platter like some fisherman’s trophy; stewed goat in tomato-based sauce that, with the meat (small pieces of which must be plucked from cleaved bones), is strangely reminiscent of pot roast; fried pork chunks: cubes of shoulder meat marinated in sour orange juice and a touch of Scotch bonnet peppers; and a grilled half-chicken, touted on the menu as free-range, which is a heckuva huge bird for $12. Plus main dishes come with a tostone disk and choice of white rice with a cup of soupy black beans or the two combined. Snapper is the highest-priced item ($19), with most main courses $15 and below. Top Tap Tap sides include airy malanga fritters and mayi moulen, a peasants’ porridge of white cornmeal and red beans. But this restaurant is about more than just food. There are great tropical fruit rum cocktails and joyfully vibrant paintings and murals. There’s also live Haitian folk-jazz by Manno Charlemagne and The Tap Tap Band filling the air Thursday and Saturday evenings beginning at 8. Since opening the eatery in 1994, owner Katherine Kean, a Haitian documentary filmmaker, has used the space to vigorously promote the cuisine, art, and music of her island’s culture. Tap Tap’s caring, value-conscious heart beats in sync with the local community like no other place on South Beach.
