The biggest surprise from Volkswagen’s preview show on the eve of the Geneva Auto show was without a doubt the new plug-in electric hybrid Porsche concept car. Called the 918 Sypder, the stunning ride can allegedly get 78 miles per gallon, can go 16 miles on electric charge alone, and can do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds.

Seeing the car in person at its unveiling, I can tell you without doubt that it’s gorgeous. All other stats are as Porsche has divulged them. And while Jalopnik roles its eyes (500 hp at 78 mpg?), it’s the idea that I’m most interested in.

Porsche coming out with a bona fide plug-in electric will make waves far beyond the crowd concerned with fuel efficiency–and even if its stats aren’t quite as hot as the press release touts, it’s still a significant development. This is a pretty big leap for a well-entrenched performance car co.–perhaps it’s a response to the Fiskers and Teslas that could soon be eating into Porsche’s market share.

And the chairman of Porsche noted at the unveiling event that the company has never made a concept car that it didn’t bring to production–hinting that the odds were likely that the Spyder 918 was more than just a stunt to get green car geeks drooling.

Mercedes-Benz F800 Style Research Vehicle

Feast your eyes on the latest design study from Mercedes-Benz. Called the F800 Style, the show car is, for the time being, purely a concept car, but we can expect to see elements appear in future Mercedes production vehicles in the near future.

For starters, the cutting-edge design. The F800 Style is expected to preview a new design direction for Benz, with the grille from the SLS AMG melded into a dynamic, organic but sharp shape. The shape is particularly expected to show the way forward for the next generation of the CLS-Class, Mercedes’ four-door coupe that spawned a new sub-segment in luxury sedans.

Under the hood, Mercedes has also installed its latest green propulsion systems. The hybrid powertrain pairs a V6 engine with an electric motor for the equivalent of 400 horsepower, with plug-in capabilities meaning it can run on electricity alone. The system is expected to make it into the next-generation production S-Class hybrid. The company is also toying with a hydrogen fuel cell set-up, but that’s a little farther off.

land-rover-lrx-lead

Is the world ready for a kinder, gentler Sport Utility Vehicle? Land Rover is betting on it, and the rugged British off-road brand will reportedly debut its hotly anticipated LRX at the Paris Motor Show later this year. Shortly thereafter, the production LRX will make its North American debut in LA. According to Automotive News, the LRX will go on sale in the third quarter of 2011.

We first saw the LRX Concept at the 2008 edition of the Detroit Auto Show, where it was generally well received by both the press and the showgoing public. The LRX is expected to be Land Rover’s most efficient model and is likely to be offered with some sort of hybrid powertrain.

Late last year, Autocar reported that Land Rover’s first hybrid drivetrain would include a 3.0-liter diesel V6 engine mated up to a 25kW electric motor. The system would be a full parallel hybrid, meaning it could operate on any combination of gasoline or electricity using its onboard lithium ion battery pack.

redsquare

The floating oligarch’s palace known as Red Square built by Turkish shipyard Dunya Yachts has been listed for sale at $86 million. The 236-ft. steel superyacht which has not one but two helipads is being fitted out like a “floating bordello” in preparation for delivery to some profligate billionaire in 2011. Designed by Diana Scott from the Monaco based studio Sterling Scott with naval architecture by Taka Yachts and interior flourishes by “master of overstatement” Alberto Pinto, Red Square can accommodate up to 16 guests in sickeningly luxurious staterooms. In addition to the two helipads, she features an infinity pool, Jacuzzi, and massive exterior entertaining spaces. Power-wise twin 3,150 hp Caterpillar diesels deliver a maximum speed of 17 knots, a cruising speed of 14 knots and a range of 4,200 nautical miles at cruising speed – hopefully more than enough to outrun your creditors.

When you’re the one drilling the oil, you can have all the Rolls-Royces you want. That’s why the Persian Gulf has been getting what seems like an endless procession of special Phantoms, created exclusively for the sheikhs and emirs.

The latest has just made its way online. Called the Yas Eagle, it was released to commemorate the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix a few months ago. It could be ordered on either the Phantom saloon, Phantom Coupe or Drophead Coupe, and features a series of special touches: the exterior has been painted two-tone blue and white, the interior in blue with red accents and blue wood veneers. Even the hood ornament is illuminated.
